“I spied for Kevin” ‘performance’ for snowboarder Kevin Pearce, who was then critically ill in hospital after a near fatal snowboarding accident, in January 2011. Kevin’s fans and friends all showed “I ride for Kevin” stickers on their boards in solidarity with the young sportsman. Such international outpouring of good wishes worked! See “The Crashreel” documentary for update on Kevin. Berlin February 2011

For many of her music performances, Lisa Hannigan lights on stage a small battery operated toadstool lamp. At the “Other Voices” filming in the Church of St James in Dingle in 2010 I made her a needle-felt toadstool brooch as I had forgotten to bring a mirror-glass toadstool Christmas decoration I had bought in Geneva with her in mind. When I gave her the Christmas decoration toadstool in 2011, she immediately put it in her hair! Dingle 2011.

“The Happy Family of Five” sculpture in front of the Theatres on the Bay, Singapore, pre yarn bombing, October 2012

IMG_4147

“The Happy Family of Five” sculpture group in front of the Singapore “Theatres on the Bay” with their crochet accessories. The Mother has a bag, the Father an i-Phone, the Daughter a scarf, the Son a Gameboy, the Baby a bottle. This was the first time anything had ever been yarn bombed in Singapore, a police state where art is only just being recognised, but with great discomfort. Art in Singapore is a money making industry, individualism and creative thought is much frowned upon. They are getting better….but only slowly. The installation is dedicated to Irishman the late Bro Jopseph McNally, who fought long and hard, without support, to found an art collegte in Singapore (which now flourishes) I was neither caned nor imprisoned for this piece of good-humoured, upbeat public art, but the pieces were removed within 10 hours without a word. I don’t know where they were taken, nor by whom. The local “Straights Times” newspaper refused to carry a photograph of the installation. I made the crochet pieces without patterns while sitting at the swimming pool. Singapore October 2012.
